Combined Breast and Torso Contouring

Integrated breast and torso contouring is the collective term for Dr. Belsley's propiertary combination of repositioning the breast on the chest wall, rebuilding the breast internal support structures to improve their spherical contour, and use of liposuction to improve defintion in relation to the surrounding tissues. It is this combination that can sometimes achieve results with a breast reduction that mimic a breast augmentation however using the patient's natural tissues instead of an implant.

There is considerable overlap between the conditions of macromastia and breast ptosis as they both affect the internal breast structure as well as the cosmetic appearance of the breast and chest. The same elements that affect internal breast structure also affect the tissues surrounding the breast particularly in the upper torso and armpit areas. These areas deform over time and reduce the spherical curvature of the upper breast and its appearance with the armpit, upper arm and torso. Integrated breast and torso contouring employs a variety of liposuction techniques and technical maneuvers to reposition the breast and then alter the surrounding tissues on the chest wall so that the new breast size, shape and position have better defintion and a rejuvenated contour in relation to the surrounding tissues.

Liposuction of the tissue that lies between the upper outer quadrant of the breast and the upper arm as well as the side of the body directly beneath the arm pit area can decrease bra band size and give the breast a narrower appearance after surgery.

This individual suffered from large breasts, breast droop and extra tissue in the breast tail and armpit area. She underwent a breast reduction in which slightly more than two and a half pounds of weight was removed from the breasts.

With integrated breast and torso contouring, the breasts are not only shortened in length but then contoured with liposuction to give a rounder appearance. These techniques allow a breast reduction to look like a breast lift. This photograph was taken at approximately five months following surgery. Scars, while still visible, are still expected to mature and fade over the next year.

In this case, an additional incision was made to remove skin from the tissue that lies between the upper outer quadrant of the breast and the upper arm on the individual’s left side. Only liposuction was performed on the individual’s right side.

Dr. Belsley's Philosophy of Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

In my practice, I perform breast lifts using incisions that result in a “lollipop” shaped scars. With good care and a bit of luck, these incisions heal well and the scars are difficult to see from a distance. Nevertheless, a woman who undergoes a cosmetic breast lift must be prepared for scars that are visible. This is one example of a “trade-off” in plastic surgery and of course, there are many others. This is one, however, that I feel is more than worthwhile in appropriate candidates.

Breast reduction is also called Reduction Mammoplasty

Breast reduction is also called Reduction Mammoplasty. Overly large breasts have appropriately been described as an “affliction.” Terms have been derived, ranging from macromastia to gigantomastia which may not be etymologically correct but are certainly image-conjuring.

The surgical technique of reduction will depend on the situation, the amount of reduction required, the preference of the patient and the decisions of the surgeon. To the extent possible, wherever the incision is placed, the nipples and areolae will be left attached to functioning breast tissue, thereby retaining normal sensation and the potential for breast feeding.
